Marlene received an award from the Alameda County Tobacco Control Coalition (ACTCC) on June 3, 2015 to recognize her notable work in the field. Marlene is currently working as the student president of Merritt College Tobacco Less Club. She also serves in several community organizations throughout Alameda County including the Oakland Housing Authority, National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials, Women’s Foundation of California Policy Institute, and the Alameda County Tobacco Control Coalition. She has worked diligently on getting Peralta Colleges to become smoke-free with passion, dedication, and professionalism. She has met with faculty who have allowed students to continue to smoke on campus, forged relationships with the faculty, the school president, the faculty senate president, the facilities management, the vice chancellor, the board of trustees and pleaded the case effectively for signage and more enforcement. She has stimulated students both at student council meetings and health fairs to actively participate in the club, as well as the Black Student Union and their statewide group. Marlene’s dedication to making the colleges in her district smoke-free has made a huge impact on students throughout Alameda County.
Thank you for all your hard work, Marlene!
