Derek Smith is the Tobacco Free Project Director at the San Francisco Department of Public Health. He has over 10 years experience in tobacco control, having previously served as the Director of the San Mateo County program. His work has focused on conducting strategic planning, building community capacity through training and support, engaging a variety of partners into health processes and engaging these local partners in public health-focused norm change. His past work experience includes mental health program evaluation for the Native American Health Center, teen health education among the Latino farmworker population in his homestate of Michigan, and a stint as a hospital social worker. He is a proud longtime resident of San Francisco’s lower income Tenderloin community, an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, involved in local political and LGBT issues, and an animal lover.
