About This Partner/Organization
The California Smokers’ Helpline (Helpline) is a free, evidence-based service that helps
smokers and other tobacco users quit. The Helpline provides self-help materials, referral
to local programs, and one-on-one telephone counseling with trained, caring specialists.
Helpline counseling has been shown in randomized, controlled trials to double smokers’
odds of quitting long-term. Available free of charge to all Californians, the service is well
utilized by the state’s diverse communities. The Helpline is open on weekdays, 7am to
9pm, and Saturday, 9am to 5pm. It can be reached through the following toll-free
numbers: • English: 1-800-NO-BUTTS • Spanish: 1-800-45-NO-FUME • A Tobacco
Chewers’ Helpline is available at 1-800-844-CHEW. The Helpline provides equivalent
Asian-language services through a CDC Cooperative Agreement. These are available
nationwide at the following toll-free numbers: • Chinese (Mandarin & Cantonese):
1-800-838-8917 • Korean: 1-800-556-5564 • Vietnamese: 1-800-778-8440. The Helpline’s
web site is at www.nobutts.org, where tobacco users can find comprehensive information
on quitting, sign up online for telephone counseling, enroll in a free text-messaging
service, chat with a counselor, or find links to download te Helpline's mobile apps. The site
also provides free tools and resources for health care providers, behavioral health
professionals, and other concerned members of the community who want to know how to
help tobacco users quit. Providers may even refer their tobacco using patients to the
Helpline at www.nobutts.org/referral. The Helpline also operates the Center for Tobacco
Cessation, which provides training and technical assistance to help build local capacity for
