Hopland Tribe (Reducing Tobacco-Related Health Disparities in the Hopland Tribal Community)

About This Partner/Organization

The Reducing Tobacco Related Health Disparities in the Hopland Tribal Community

Project will have three objectives. The first is to engage the Hopland Band Tribal

members in education to voluntarily adopt a no smoking policy in their homes, by doing so

the hope is to reduce the amount of tobacco use and provide a healthier indoor

environment for tribal families. The creation and facilitation of a tribal youth coalition will

promote the importance of ceremonial/traditional tobacco use versus commercial tobacco

use. The youth coalition will provide an opportunity for learning and building leadership

skills for the youth to effectively educate their peers and advocate for tobacco control

issues on their tribal lands and beyond. The adoption and implementation of an excise tax

on the sale of commercial tobacco products will result in reduced tobacco use and will

provide long term funding for tobacco control efforts.
