Inyo County (Inyo County Tobacco Education Program)
About This Partner/Organization
The Inyo County Tobacco Control Program is housed within the Inyo County Health and
Human Services Department and serves all the communities and populations within Inyo
County. Inyo County is one of the largest geographic counties in California, with 10,140
square miles encompassing both the highest and lowest elevation in the continental US.
Over 97% of the land is owned by federal government agencies or by the City of Los
Angeles, which limits development and population growth. Inyo County has one of the
smallest population bases in the state with 18,474 people. A majority of Inyo County’s
population identifies as Euro-American, with significant minorities identifying as Latino and
American Indian. Inyo County’s smoking and chewing tobacco use rates are higher than
the state average, and American Indians are overrepresented in the number of current
smokers. Smokeless tobacco in particular is a major problem among youth in our rural
county.
