La Familia (Resident-Led Systems Change in Unincorporated Alameda County and Neighboring Jurisdictions)

About This Partner/Organization

Resident-Led Systems Change in Unincorporated Alameda County and Neighboring

Jurisdictions is a project of Southern Alameda County Comite for Raza Mental Health

(dba La Familia) and the coalition Ashland Cherryland Together. This intiative endeavors

to work with Latino and Spanish-speaking youth and adults in the Bay Area (Alameda,

Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Solano counties) to

build resident leadership and capacity in order to authentically promote 1.) the adoption of

smoke-free multi-unit housing ordinances in at least three jurisdictions, 2.) the adoption of

a tobacco retail license ordinance in at least two jurisdictions, 3.) enhanced access

to cessation services, specific to the California Smokers' Helpline, coupled with culturally

appropriate cessation messages and technical assistance to improve cessation work with

Latino and Spanish-speaking individuals, and 4.) youth development and engagement

practices in support of local tobacco policy adoption. These strategies in combination will

have a unique impact on the Latino and Spanish-speaking residents in the Bay Area who

are disproportionately targeted and affected by tobacco products and marketing and will

ultimately help our state strive to end the tobacco epidemic by 2035.
