Siskiyou County (Siskiyou County Tobacco Education Project)

Siskiyou County is a vast and geographically diverse rural area, encompassing 6,278

square miles, making it the fifth largest county by area in California. Siskiyou is home to

approximately 43,799 residents with Yreka being the largest city (population approx.7,

765) and the county seat. In addition to the County Government, ten cities in Siskiyou

County have individual governments, including; Mt. Shasta, Weed, Mc Cloud, Dunsmuir,

Yreka, Montague, Dorris, Tulelake, Etna, and Fort Jones. The Siskiyou County Tobacco

Education Project is the Local Lead Agency responsible for preparing and submitting a

comprehensive tobacco control plan to the California Department of Public Health,

Tobacco Control Program on behalf of Siskiyou County. Major goals of the project are to

reduce exposure of all county residents to second-hand and third-hand smoke; to reduce

the availability of tobacco and counter pro-tobacco influences directed toward youth;

collaborate with both tobacco funded and diverse partners to promote community norm

change and utilize environmental strategies to combat tobacco; and support tobacco users

through promotion of the California Smokers’ Helpline and by providing resources on an

individual basis. T
